Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers. Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers (1976)

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers is the eponymous debut album by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, released in late 1976.

Initially following its release, the album received little attention in the United States. Following a British tour, it climbed to the #24 on the UK album chart and the single "Anything That's Rock 'n' Roll" became a hit in the UK. After nearly a year and many positive reviews, the album reached the U.S. charts, where it climbed to #55 and eventually went Gold. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. Long After Dark (1982)

Long After Dark is the fifth album by Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, released in November of 1982 on MCA Backstreet Records. Notable for the major MTV hit "You Got Lucky", the album was also the first to feature the late Howie Epstein on bass and harmony vocals. Epstein's voice is extremely present throughout the album, most notably on "Change Of Heart". From this point on Epstein's vocals became an integral part of the Heartbreakers' sound.

Tom Petty. Full Moon Fever (1989)

Full Moon Fever is the "solo" debut album by Tom Petty, though it actually features many of the Heartbreakers, along with members of the Traveling Wilburys. Due to this, the album is often referred to as Vol. 2 of the Wilburys. The record shows Petty's musical roots and influences with a Byrds cover ("I'll Feel a Whole Lot Better") and a nod to Del Shannon ("Runnin' Down a Dream"'s lyric of me and Del were singin' "Little Runaway"). The album features one of Petty's most popular and recognizable songs, "Free Fallin'," which has appeared in several film soundtracks, and was sampled by De La Soul, and Teenage Fanclub for their 1994 collaboration "Fallin'". The song "I Won't Back Down" was used as George W. Bush's campaign song in the 2000 Presidential Election, until Petty found out and threatened to sue. Later, Jim Webb used the song for his successful bid for one of Virginia's U.S. Senate seats in 2006.

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. Damn The Torpedoes (1979)

Damn the Torpedoes is an album by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers released in 1979. The title is a reference to a famous quote by Admiral David Farragut. The album was recorded at Sound City in Van Nuys and Cherokee Studios in Hollywood.

This album, the band's third, was their first for MCA Records. Their old label, Shelter Records, had been sold to MCA; Petty struggled to legally detach himself from MCA, but in the end was forced to settle. He negotiated a deal that allowed him to release his recordings on the new Backstreet Records label, manufactured and distributed by MCA. Damn the Torpedoes ended up being the band's breakthrough hit, and includes many of their best reviewed songs and favorite concert standards today, including "Here Comes My Girl" (the third single release, charting at #59), "Even the Losers" and "Shadow of a Doubt (A Complex Kid)".

Damn the Torpedoes was a #2 hit (for seven weeks and kept from #1 by Pink Floyd's The Wall) on the Billboard's Pop Albums chart, and yielded two songs that made the top-fifteen on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, "Don't Do Me Like That" (#10) and "Refugee" (#15), both in early 1980.

In 2003, the album was ranked number 313 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.
