Green Day. Warning (2000)

Warning is the sixth full length album by Green Day, released in 2000. Building upon predecessor Nimrod, Warning eschews their trademark punk rock sound and incorporated acoustic elements. Warning was also the first Green Day album that was not produced by Rob Cavallo since Kerplunk.

Although Warning reached #4 on the charts and went gold, the album clearly displayed the fact that Green Day was not enjoying the success they had earned in the past, and held a less prominent spot in the mainstream. Despite its high critical response, it represented the lowest commercial slump in the band's career since their 1994 breakthrough Dookie.

Reaching #4 in the U.S. and UK, Warning has sold 500 thousand units in the U.S. and 5 million worldwide as of August 2006

Green Day. American Idiot (2004)

American Idiot is the seventh studio album by the punk rock band Green Day, originally released on September 21, 2004. Often classified as a rock opera and concept album, it was the first Green Day album to reach number one in the United States and United Kingdom. Rob Cavallo produced the album, his fourth for Green Day.

This album marked the end of a commercial slump for Green Day. Many had speculated that they would find it difficult to follow up Warning, which itself had proved slightly less popular than Nimrod. This is also hinted at with the long gestation time of this album, filled in with a greatest hits album (International Superhits!) and a B-sides album (Shenanigans). This is likely another reason for the band's decision to completely re-invent their style with this conceptual work. All of the album's singles proved very popular, a feat not matched since Dookie.

American Idiot debuted at #1 on the U.S. Billboard charts on October 9, 2004, thanks to the success of the "American Idiot" single. Over three months later, around the release of "Boulevard of Broken Dreams," the album returned to the number one position for two more weeks.

Green Day. Dookie (1994)

Dookie is the third studio album and the major label debut by American punk rock band Green Day. The album was the band's first collaboration with producer Rob Cavallo. Released on February 1, 1994 through Reprise Records, Dookie became a worldwide commercial success, reaching number two on the U.S. Billboard 200 and charting in seven countries. The album helped to propel Green Day into mainstream popularity, amid claims from the punk rock community that the band had "sold out".

Dookie produced five hit singles for the band: "Longview", the re-recorded "Welcome to Paradise", "Basket Case", the radio-only single "She" and "When I Come Around". As of 2008, Dookie is the band's best-selling album, with over 15 million copies sold worldwide. It is Green Day's only diamond album. Dookie won the Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album in 1995.

Following the underground success of the band's second album Kerplunk (1992), a number of major labels became interested in Green Day. Representatives of these labels attempted to entice the band to sign by inviting them for meals to discuss a deal, with one manager even inviting the group to Disneyland. The band declined these advances until meeting producer and Reprise representative Rob Cavallo. They were impressed by his work with fellow Californian band The Muffs, and later remarked that Cavallo "was the only person we could really talk to and connect with".

Eventually, the band left their independent record label Lookout! Records on friendly terms, and signed to Reprise. Signing to a major label caused many of the band's original fans from the independent music club 924 Gilman Street to regard Green Day as sell-outs. The club has banned Green Day from entering since the major label signing. Reflecting back on the period, lead vocalist Billie Joe Armstrong told Spin magazine in 1999, "I couldn't go back to the punk scene, whether we were the biggest success in the world or the biggest failure [...] The only thing I could do was get on my bike and go forward."
